چکیده

Using the coupled climate model CLIMBER3a, we investigate changes in sea surface elevation due to a weakening of the thermohaline circulation (THC). In addition to a global sea level rise due to a warming of the deep sea, this leads to a regional dynamic sea level change which follows quasi-instantaneously any change in the ocean circulation. We show that the magnitude of this dynamic effect can locally reach up to 1 m, depending on the initial THC strength. In some regions the rate of change can be up to 20–25 mm/yr. The emerging patterns are discussed with respect to the oceanic circulation changes. Most prominent is a southnorth gradient reflecting the changes in geostrophic surface currents. Our results suggest that an analysis of observed sea level change patterns could be useful for monitoring the THC strength.

Thermohaline Ocean Circulation

The thermohaline circulation is that part of the ocean circulation which is driven by fluxes of heat and freshwater across the sea surface and subsequent interior mixing of heat and salt. The term thus refers to a driving mechanism. Important features of the thermohaline circulation are deep water formation, spreading of deep waters partly through deep boundary currents, upwelling and near-surf...

Modes of Oceanic and Atmospheric Circulation During the Quaternary

Paleoclimatic evidence shows that the ocean and atmosphere have undergone major changes during the Quaternary. For atmospheric mean circulation, data are consistent with changes in strength and shifts in position of major atmospheric circulation features (e.g., the westerly wind belt), whereas the structure of these main features appears to have persisted. For the ocean, evidence points to qual...

RAPID TRANSITIONS OF THE THERMOHALINE OCEAN CIRCULATION A Modelling Perspective

This chapter discusses the stability of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation with special emphasis on the critical thresholds and state transitions found in model experiments. The thermohaline ocean circulation is a major heat transport mechanism which causes the relatively mild climate in the North Atlantic region (including Europe) in the modern times. The formation of North Atlantic Deep Wa...

Thermohaline circulation changes: a question of risk assessment

This May, Bjørn Lomborg’s “Environmental Assessment Institute” published a report [Olsen and Buch, 2004] on the risk of ocean circulation changes in the Atlantic, to coincide with the release of Roland Emmerich’s Hollywood blockbuster The Day after Tomorrow (a film based on a shut-down of the North Atlantic Current). Given its lack of expertise on ocean circulation and climate, the Environmenta...
